The rate of
telecommunications industry investment in broadband network management
systems is outpacing broadband service revenues’ growth rates on a global
basis, according to a report released by The Insight Research
Corporation. This report indicates spending on the network management
systems needed to manage and maintain new digital cable TV networks,
wireless, and phone company networks will grow at a compounded rate of 22
percent between 2004 and 2009, while broadband service revenue is expected
to grow at a compounded rate of only 15 percent over the same period.
Insight Research’s most
recent report,
Broadband
Network Management 2004-2009, reveals that worldwide spending
on broadband network management systems will jump from $6.1 billion in
2004 to almost $14 billion by 2009. Network management systems (NMSes)
will be necessary to work with the new optical elements in an IP-based
environment. This market forecast report considers whether true service
assurance can be provided in real-time, and whether quality of service
(QoS) guarantees actually generate additional revenue.
“The first round of
investment in broadband NMSes went into the core or long-distance portion
of the network just prior to the turn of the Millennium, but now we are
witnessing a second wave of network management investment in the access
and metro portions of the network,” says Robert Rosenberg, President of
Insight Research. “These NMSes are critical to any broadband service
offer; they have to be in place before the any new service is deployed,”
Rosenberg concludes.
Insight Research’s
market analysis study details global and regional network management
trends, and forecasts spending on the operations support systems (OSSes)
needed to manage these broadband networks. The backdrop for this
discussion includes an assessment of the technology behind current access,
metro, and core broadband networks; such as SONET, Gigabit Ethernet, ATM,
DWDM, IP, DSL, frame relay, and HFC networks. Insight’s report also
addresses key software development issues within the broader context of
network management systems.
