The perception that enterprise wireless
Internet use would be leveraged by consumer use, where wireless devices
are most prevalent, has been turned on its head, says a new report from
Insight Research. Wireless Internet access can be uniquely exploited
by mobile enterprise users for anytime, anywhere access to time-critical
information pulled from corporate Intranets. Applications developed
for businesses will drive the market for the wireless Web while the
consumer market struggles through its formative years.
According to Wireless Portals
and Wireless Service Providers 2001-2006, extensive wireless Web
browsing and mobile commerce are not yet practical for consumers, given
the present limitations on content, presentation, and delivery. For
businesses, however, today’s limitations of wireless speed, quality of
service, and reliability have not significantly hindered the adoption of
sales force automation, customer care, warehouse management, and shipment
tracking applications. And once new technologies such as 3G, voice
recognition, and Bluetooth are combined and harnessed, mission-critical
solutions that sit behind corporate firewalls will become more prevalent,
fulfilling the early promise of the wireless Web that has yet to be
realized on the consumer side.
“Analysts said that wireless would be The Next
Internet. They said it would drive mobile commerce.
Unfortunately, these things haven’t happened, and won’t happen for at
least the next few years,” says Insight president Robert Rosenberg.
“The market for these services will grow, but only as rapidly as
advanced technologies are deployed and more enticing applications can
evolve. If ever there was a market begging for a killer app, this is
it.”
