The latest hype, hope, and hoopla over IP as a be-all, end-all network solution has pushed ATM out of the headlines, yet ATM remains the strongest choice for public and private network interconnectivity, says a new report by
Insight Research. ATM has evolved to become the best approach for merging many different types of traffic onto a single network while providing quality performance for all.
According to Insight's report ATM: Services and Technology at a Crossroads 1998-2003, traditional carriers will be more comfortable with ATM solutions as the next evolutionary step in upgrading their voice networks while newer carriers will be more willing to consider other alternatives such as IP. The build-up of demand for ATM connectivity will be a supply-push rather than a demand-pull market, with established carriers using ATM for their own needs and creating an infrastructure that will make users find ATM a more attractive way to accomplish their own communications functions. Global retail service revenue to business and home users, at just $168 million this year, will jump to $7.3 billion by 2003.
"ATM has many attractive features for carriers, but we don't want to imply that it is going to be the single network solution," explains Robert Rosenberg, president of
Insight. "In five years there will likely be a lot of voice-over-IP, pure IP backbones, lots of ATM networks carrying voice and IP traffic, and still some traditional circuit-switched voice networks. All will have to live together and be used where each works best," Rosenberg concluded.
Five-year forecasts of worldwide wholesale and retail ATM service revenue and private and public ATM equipment sales are published in
ATM: Services and Technology at a Crossroads 1998-2003, a 188-page market research study. Study features include profiles of 48 ATM equipment vendors, applications and trends driving the market, and strengths/weaknesses of various network options.
