Using the Internet to make international calls is the next big arbitrage opportunity, says a new report by
Insight Research. Over the past several years, international callers avoided sky-high prices by using discounted services such as callback. As a result of this competitive pressure, as well as worldwide deregulation, monopoly phone companies have been forced to drop their international calling rates to win back customers.
Insight predicts that now Internet-based calling will become the preferred means for new operators to gain a price advantage.
Insight's new report, IP Telephony,
ISR, and Callback: The Deregulated European Market, takes a detailed look at the recently liberated European telecommunications market in light of these changes. New entrants are quickly building local and long distance infrastructure based on Internet technologies, as well as reselling service over existing networks.
Insight predicts that the international calling market share of new phone company entrants in the UK, Germany, France and Italy will grow from an average of 23.3 percent in 1998 to 56 percent by the year 2003.
"Despite their best intentions, we don't see the old style European telephone companies being able to keep up with this," explains Robert Rosenberg, president of
Insight. "Not only are they dying the death of a thousand cuts as herds of new entrants compete for their customers, but their biggest asset, the circuit-switched network, will soon need replacing to keep pace with IP telephony."
Detailed assessments of the threats and opportunities in the European telecoms market are published in IP Telephony,
ISR, and Callback: The Deregulated European Market, a 176-page market research study. Study features include 16 country profiles examining the market environment and key players, and five-year forecasts of market share and telecommunications revenue throughout Europe.
