While U.S. small businesses increase their spending on telecom products and services by 6.8 percent over the next five years, small businesses owned by women will nearly double that growth at 12.6 percent through 2005, says a new report by
Insight Research. By 2005, women-owned small businesses will spend as much as their male-owned counterparts on telecom products, enhanced services, and Internet access--approximately $61 billion annually.
According to Insight's report Small Business Telecom: Opportunities in the Women- and Minority-Owned Small Business Marketplace, female-owned small businesses represent one of the fastest growth markets for telecom service and equipment providers over the next five years. The common availability of sophisticated technology that was previously only obtainable in a corporate environment has leveled the playing field between big and small companies. For many small businesses, being on the cutting-edge of technology means having a competitive edge. To reach the growing female-owned small business segment, telcos need to rethink and revamp both their real and virtual retail channel strategies.
"Communications companies serving the small business market must understand and appreciate its complexity," says Robert Rosenberg, president of
Insight. "Work-at-home mothers represent the largest portion of the female small business market, but Hispanic women business owners are the fastest growing segment of the small business community in the nation, across all genders and ethnic groups. The richness of diversity represented by the small business market will be a significant revenue opportunity for those companies that can meet its needs."
Additional data in Small Business Telecom: Opportunities in the Women- and Minority-Owned Small Business Marketplace includes five-year telecom expenditures for Hispanic, Asian, African-American, female-owned, male-owned, solo-entrepreneurial and home-based U.S. small businesses.
Insight estimates the installed base of small business wireless phones, pagers, PCs, fax machines, modems, and Internet access through 2005. A free report excerpt and table of contents is available at
