The enormous increase in
telecommunications traffic, which is creating unprecedented
difficulties in managing huge amounts of copper and optical fibers,
will drive demand for new-generation Digital Cross Connects (DCS) at
a compound annual growth rate of 48.1 percent over the next five
years, says a new report by Insight Research.
DCS manage the connections between two or more points in a
transmission network. According to Insight's report Digital Cross Connects
2000-2005, DCS's management function is becoming increasingly
important as new networks are created and new elements added to
networks to provide new services. The DCS, because of its physical
location at the junctions of telecom routes and because of its
responsibilities as the transmission manager, plays a crucial role
in interconnecting disparate traffic protocols and line speeds from
the core carrier network to the local loop. Many of these new DCS
will be installed in telephone company central offices as well as
remote positions in user premises, field locations, and colocation
facilities like carrier hotels. The total market for DCS in 2000
will be $4.8 billion, growing to $34.3 billion by 2005.
"The next-generation DCS products will be incredibly attractive
to CLECs, IXCs, and wireless carriers--any new carrier with a need
to rapidly build out service capacity via colocation, and that's
just about everyone," says Robert Rosenberg, president of Insight.
"We suspect ILECs will be slower to adopt new DCS because of
incompatibility between DCS network management and their legacy
operations support systems."
Additional data in Digital Cross Connects
2000-2005 includes five-year revenue forecasts for six types of
DCS devices, each representing a multi-billion dollar business
opportunity: integrated access devices, customer service nodes,
digital loop carriers (DLCs), access managers, ring managers, and
trunk managers. A
