Telecom
service providers eager to shed expenses and improve operating margins
will increasingly outsource operations such as billing, directory
assistance, SS7 clearinghouse and OSS interconnect services, says a
new report from Insight Research. Insight
predicts the market for telecommunications outsourcing will top $5.3
billion this year, growing to $10.1 billion by 2005.
According
to Insight’s report Service Bureau Operations in Telecom, carriers can survive the current economic downturn by competing
more efficiently and focusing on their core business, which means
greater reliance on outsourcing. Outsourcing can provide access to skills, technology, industry
expertise, and applications proficiency a carrier may not have
in-house.
Insight’s research found that SS7 clearinghouse services such as call set-up
services, local number portability (LNP), collect and calling card
calls (LIDB), toll free calls, and customer name look-ups represent
the largest outsourcing opportunity. Operations support system (OSS) interconnect services, a market
established in 1999 at $30 million, will exhibit the fastest revenue
growth over the forecast period.
“Traditional
telecom providers have had a bias toward keeping everything in-house,
but as the entire telecom food chain becomes more complex, this will
change,” says Insight president
Robert Rosenberg. “Once
carriers begin providing multiple services and dealing with wholesale
and retail variations of each type of service, the difficulties in
keeping it all together will force carriers to look for ways to
simplify their business, making outsourcing an increasingly attractive
option.”
