IP telephony, using the Internet protocol to make voice telephone calls, will drive the price of a phone call way down as new billing systems give service providers greater flexibility in charging customers, says a new report by
Insight Research. Instead of being locked into the traditional phone company distance and duration billing method, IP-billing systems enable carriers to charge for phone calls using any number of metrics. For example, a customer might choose to sacrifice voice call quality in order to get a rock-bottom price for a lower grade of transmission.
According to Insight's report IP Billing: Moving Beyond Telecom's Time/Distance Billing Model, IP billing offers multiple benefits to consumers and service providers alike. Since IP-based services can be tracked in real-time, customers can register and access services with greater speed, and service providers can enjoy more accurate, timely billing cycles. IP billing systems also allow carriers to bill for specific network resource usage, which means greater profitability for service providers.
"IP telephony is engendering a new model for phone service billing that works in real-time and is truly usage-based," says Robert Rosenberg, president of
Insight. "With IP billing, time and distance hardly matter, it is bandwidth and priority that you will be paying for. Transmission quality and the quantity of data transmitted is going to drive the pricing models of phone companies in the future. And if you think today's calling plans are impossibly complex, just wait. Expect to see even more detailed discount programs based upon numerous IP-based variables," Rosenberg concludes.
Further IP billing market analysis is published in IP Billing: Moving Beyond Telecom's Time/Distance Billing Model, a 137-page market research study. This report provides five-year revenue forecasts for billing and customer care software, IP billing products, and IP telephony.
