A new way to route and manage wireless calls promises to radically alter cellular and PCS phone usage, says a new market analysis report from
Insight Research. Wireless phone users will soon be able to receive voice calls, faxes, or e-mail messages--and with smart-card capability, they'll be able to pick up those calls on any phone that is handy, not just the one they own, predicts
Insight.
According to Insight's The Market for Wireless Intelligent Networks, the Intelligent Network (IN) architecture being built into newer wireless networks separates call processing and feature functionality from network switches, placing that intelligence and functionality in databases spread across the network.
With this new capability, wireless phone subscribers will be able to configure voice mail, access the Internet, use voice-activated dialing and many other services on any nearby device. Carriers benefit by using IN to simplify mobility management, improve fraud control, and lower operating costs.
"IN's promise to the wireless user is real mobility--not just a handset that travels," says Robert Rosenberg, president of
Insight. "This technology means people will able to get all kinds of messages on any nearby device, and the device will always respond the way they expect," Rosenberg says.
According to Insight, adding revenue from IN-related feature/service charges, additional airtime stimulated by IN-enhanced features, and IN-associated roamer revenue will generate about $2.8 billion for cellular and PCS carriers in 1997. That number should increase to $22.4 billion by 2002, a compound annual growth rate of 51.6 percent over the forecast period.
Further forecasts of wireless services, subscribers, and revenues are published in The Market for Wireless Intelligent Networks.
