Internet Telephony
and Voice over IP (VoIP) Packet gateways will dominate
the signaling gateway market over the next several years,
representing 82 percent of the total $587.8 million in
sales revenue next year alone, says a new report by
Insight Research.
According to Insight's report Gateways
and the Telecom Carrier: Middleware and Mediation
Platforms for NextGeneration Networks, Internet
Telephony and VoIP technologies are fast becoming the
foundation for a multitude of innovative, cost-effective
telecommunications services, but incumbent carriers
cannot totally replace their existing circuit-switched
voice networks. Signaling gateways will be installed to
bridge the gap between the circuit-switched world and the
new packet-based networks.
VoIP Packet and Internet Telephony gateways are
fundamental to the long-term plans for global carriers.
Carriers are being forced to create network architectures
that will allow customers to integrate, access, and share
data regardless of geography, technology, protocol, and
organizational boundaries. By implementing gateways,
carriers have the flexibility to configure their networks
to meet their customer's needs. Carriers can protect
their massive investment in existing infrastructure while
still designing innovative services that operate on IP
packet networks.
Gateways offer numerous opportunities for
equipment suppliers and middleware vendors seeking to
deliver solutions to carriers and enterprise
networks, says Robert Rosenberg, president of
Insight. Gateways give network providers greater
freedom in choosing applications from new vendors and
they will support the creation of new, specialized
services.
The Gateways
and the Telecom Carrier report sizes the market for
ten types of signaling gateways, providing revenue,
shipment, and pricing data for each segment through 2004.
The report will help infrastructure suppliers, gateway
vendors, and ASPs understand the requirements of carriers
as they migrate to next-generation network architectures.
