Enhanced Directory Services and ENUM
2004-2009
a market research report
|
|
ENUM (telephone number mapping) is the ITEF protocol that bridges the Internet to the PSTN by allowing many Internet-enabled services and devices to be linked to a phone number. While the standard itself is straightforward to implement, the bridge created between the two worldwide networks will open a new frontier, which will be fraught with novel business, security, and social issues that must be addressed by the telecommunications industry.
In this study, Insight examines ENUMs impact on traditional carrier directory and enhanced service offerings. If a full implementation of the ENUM directory services was created, what would the network look like? Would it be possible to use a single universal number to replace the multiple numbers and addresses we each associate with our phone and Internet devices?
This market analysis study examines ENUM and its potential impact on traditional telephony services such as voice mail, call redirection, and directory services. It also assesses the impact that ENUM will have on the development of new VoIP service concepts.
