Business telecom services had been the exclusive
province of telcos, but that is changing. Telecom providers such as
Verizon and AT&T have had a 30 year head start over CATV operators in
supplying business services. And while CATV operators such as Comcast,
Time Warner Cable and Cox have extensive access networks that pass
within several hundred feet of most businesses, their business services
market share is only in the single digits. The opportunity appears
obvious and, indeed, every major cable operator is targeting small
businesses and enterprises as their top priority over the next five
years.

services to the enterprise and small business market. This study
examines how CATV operators are leveraging their existing fiber
networks—built primarily to transport broadcast video services—to

Any twenty-something in the US can explain to you why
the business model that cable TV operators depended on for so many years
will soon become moribund. As entertainment services of all types are
distributed on-demand via the Internet, the programming and distribution
model that the cable industry invented some 60 years ago becomes less and
less relevant to the cohort groups that are the biggest buyers of
entertainment services and —not coincidently—that practically live with the
Internet always on.
So if the business as usual path looks fraught with
problems, where can the cable industry go from here? One trend that has
already been well documented is creating content and using that fresh
material—which can be accessed through no other distribution system than
cable — to hold on to the consumer audience. The other direction—the

US cable television multiple system operators (MSO)
have a 60 year history providing various types of services to residential
customers, but their experience in providing services to commercial
enterprises dates back only about 15 years. In the $480 billion per year US
telecommunications industry, the MSO’s thus far have missed out on one of
the biggest slices of the telecom pie.
