Managed Services in an IP World: Global Opportunities for Wireless and Wired
Networks, 2011-2016
a market research report
|
|
Managed services, traditionally supplied by carriers or
systems integrators to support their customer’s requirements for
complete WAN solutions, are headed into new territory. Whereas these
services used to require separate capabilities for monitoring each
voice, data, mobile or video service, convergence based on common IP
networks and systems technology will present new opportunities for
wireless and wireline providers.
In this study, Insight will provide a detailed analysis
of the current state of the managed services marketplace: the providers,
the technology, and the scope of current service offerings. The study
differentiates among four segments of managed services: managed WAN
services, managed LAN, mobility management, and managed infrastructure.
In addition to the revenue forecasts for these market segments,
forecasts are provided for various market subdivisions including managed
IP VPNs and IP endpoints, managed security services, managed WLANs, VoIP
services, managed hosting and managed storage and a number of other
significant areas within the managed services domain. Also provided is
Insight’s survey of outsourced disaster recovery and storage management
services by vertical industry.

The telecommunications market is a mature industry,
exhibiting only low single-digit growth each year. The Managed Services
market, on the other hand, will grow two to three times the rate of the
global telecom marketplace. The underlying reason for the much faster
growth in the Managed Services segment is the challenge faced by business
enterprises of all sizes to deliver the next generation of business
applications, while simultaneously migrating their supporting telecom
networks to new technologies, such as IP and wireless. Generally, these new
types of applications and the network migration strategies need to get those
applications before the end-user community has to be absorbed within current
resource and capital budgets. The complexity faced by the enterprise
manager in managing these applications and networks within these constraints
is compounded by the multiple networks, support systems, and services that
have to be integrated into a modern corporate communications network.
The US and global economic growth that seemed to be
starting in 2010 has waned and we will likely see another year of slow
growth through 2012. Throughout 2011, US joblessness and domestic consumer
confidence continued to drag on the economy. The unemployment rate in the
United States will likely remain above nine percent through 2012, which is
almost double the average rate over the past 30 years.
With the global and the US economy stagnant, and
businesses not hiring, enterprise IT departments must still find a way get
those new applications before their end-user communities. Increasingly,
enterprise application performance is becoming critical to the health of
businesses. A large percentage of business activity now depends on the
Internet from everything from electronic commerce to intranet applications
to customer service. Increasing use of video and wireless services is
driving exponential bandwidth demands onto enterprise networks. As more
endpoints and applications are added to enterprise networks the combined
traffic will drive “an order of magnitude increase” on to enterprise
networks.
Managed Services can help solve these IT challenges.
Managed Services let enterprises outsource the most complicated elements of
their information systems, including network management across multiple
transport providers and devices. With limited IT staffing, the enterprise
can focus on the developing the corporate application, while outsourcing the
network design, installation, and management to a provider who has the
“state of the art” tools and skills to do it right. New cloud-based
applications ...........
