Wireless technology has fully penetrated enterprises and enabled businesses of all sizes to experience some benefits of a mobile workforce. As enterprises increasingly look to expand customer service, the next generation of wireless products and services will enable more robust enterprise applications to support an expanded mobile workforce. Over the past decade, wireless networks, devices, and applications have been developed to support the most basic enterprise applications, such as voice, email, ordering, and tracking. These developments were largely independent of the enterprise applications on the wireline side, which were expanding to support broadband access to intranet and internet applications. The next few years will see an increasing integration of wireline and wireless applications, enabled by new technologies, such as IMS, 3G networks, smart phones, and WiMAX devices.

This report will provide a detailed analysis of the wireless technologies, application platforms, and workforce trends that will accompany this integration.  Carriers, device manufacturers, software companies, and application providers are swarming around this market, searching for the key set of features needed to win in the high-margin, enterprise application space. Mobility and IP convergence will be examined, along with fixed-mobile convergence, IMS, and content services. Insight will provide forecasts of enterprise wireless service demand by wireless application type as well as demand by vertical industry.

    1.1 What is Enterprise Mobility

The nature of mobility and how it is used in the enterprise is changing—and in the process mobility is changing the very nature of how businesses are operating.

Enterprise mobility, as we use the term throughout this study, refers to applications that support and enable the mobility of enterprise employees as well as enterprise assets. This report will examine many important enterprise applications that can be accessed from mobile devices such as mobile phones, tablets and sensors using cellular wireless spectrum.  The defining feature of all the applications under discussion is that they are tailored to be rendered on mobile devices.  This report will look closely at several important application areas including:

    ·      Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and fixed mobile convergence (FMC)

    ·      E-mail and instant messaging (IM)

    ·      Conferencing and collaboration

    ·      Machine to machine (M2M) communication

    ·      Sales force automation (SFA)

In fact, as we will illustrate throughout this study, mobility has graduated from being a wireless appendage grafted onto conventional enterprise applications to acquiring a distinct character all its own. While a majority of enterprise mobile applications still have their roots in conventional PC based environments, we are seeing tangible signals of the arrival of mobile-specific features in various enterprise applications that, our research suggest, will eventually culminate in the development of "mobile-only" enterprise applications.

That these developments are occurring rapidly in the current business environment  and in spite of the challenging limitations of device form factors ...........
